About Us
At Canine CellMates, our mission is Utilizing Shelter Dogs to Break the Cycle of Incarceration.
The overarching goal of Canine CellMates is to break the devastating cycle of repeat arrests &
incarceration happening far too often in
Atlanta. Founded in 2013, the jail component of our program began in Fulton County Jail, pairing carefully-selected detainees in the jail with temperament-assessed shelter dogs from Fulton County Animal Services. Throughout the ten week cycle training classes are held Monday – Friday. During these classes the handlers learn the skills necessary to train their dogs in basic obedience. In
addition to learning how to train their dogs, the
program participants also sit in other curriculum & have weekly guest speakers on different topics, all designed to help them succeed outside the walls of the jail. Upon graduation, the dogs are adopted into
loving, forever homes & the men leave equipped with new skills to promote positive change.
